Mar 12 2019 IT Support Engineer Craig and his Apprenticeship Craig started at Metsec just over 14 years ago and having already gained a number of IT related qualifications, Craig really wanted the experience in the industry. After hearing about apprenticeships in the local papers he went to an apprenticeship event where he spoke to Metsec. “I started Metsec as an apprentice based solely within the IT Department. To begin with I mainly answered the telephones and did administration work. I used to go out on site shadowing the other members of the IT team at the time and helped out with any tasks they gave me. As an apprentice I did a cut down version “of the rounds” so to speak. I spent a week in each area of the business learning different aspects of what we do. This included both offices and the shop floor. I found this to be useful because it gave me a real insight into what systems were used and by who and also helped me to understand the processes within the business from the steel coming through the door to the product being despatched to a customer.” Craig Skidmore During his time at Metsec he’s also taken advantage of gaining more qualifications. He’s completed a number of Microsoft courses relating to operating systems, and he’s also completed a HNC in Computer Studies which he is now topping up to a Foundation Degree in IT and Computing at the Open University. Craig comments on his overall experience. “My experience of being an apprentice at Metsec has been a positive one, every part of the business that I worked in was helpful and willing to let you know what their role was and how that impacted on what Metsec do. I enjoyed my time as an apprentice and I now enjoy my time as a support engineer.” For more information on Metsec apprenticeships please see our apprenticeship page.
